I walked purposefully. Unaffected. Strong. It had hit like a 2 tonne truck on my frail structure. But here I was no broken bones, no bruises. I simply got up, fixed my skirt and kept on walking.
Up until the age of 14, that was my attitude. I was strong, I was smart and I was confident. I loved the person that I was. It’s not that I thought it hadn't affected my life. That would have seriously delusional.
"Yes I am 22 now."
"Yes I have finished my degree."
"Well I’m looking for a job right now."
"No aunty I don’t have a boyfriend."
"No aunty no one has approached me."
"NO THERE ISN'T EVEN A HINT OF A MAN SNIFFING AROUND ME."
(The last one was said in my head….never, never, never out loud)
I recently separated from someone very close to me. No, it wasn't a romantic relationship. It was something much more meaningful. It was a friendship. A friendship I had assumed would go on for our lifetimes. It wasn't a smooth separation, it was harsh and unexpected. It was a jagged cut, so I guess it’s taking just a bit longer to heal. Though I am not sure that you can ever fully recover from losing such a friendship, but maybe the fact that I miss her is clouding my judgment.
I live in a fantasy world. A world that seems to exists only in my imagination. A world brought to life only on the black and white screens of the television. I only know it in the world of 'Casablanca', 'A bride for Henry', 'Pillow Talk', my good old favourite 'Gone With the Wind' and I can’t leave out 'Sabrina'. I have only seen it with the likes of Cary Grant, Fred Astaire and Humphrey Bogart. This world seems to have died alongside the greys that once used to grace our televisions.
Lately, love has been on my mind. And by lately, I mean maybe the last 26 years of my life. I'm coming up on my 28th birthday, so the maths isn't too bad there. I've had nearly a couple of years of thinking about something else. I wonder what it was? I bet it was something shiny. Maybe kitchen foil? I'm digressing and even worse I'm literally getting distracted by “something shiny”. Back to the topic at hand! Love.
